UNITED STATES

Composers included in “United States” were from the United States and Territories. Many were from the Northeast, moving westward with the expansion. A significant number were trained in Boston or New York while others had little training other than the musical conventions, singing schools or normal schools popular across the continent in the 19th Century. Some North American-born composers traveled to European music centers or conservatories for training, usually returning to their native region. A few were born and trained in Great Britain or other European countries and relocated to North America. The array of these American choral compsers spans church musicians and Gospel-Song writers to professional performers, conductors, and educators. Some of these piece were written for quartet singing, popular in the 19th Century.

 

All are SATB and unaccompanied unless noted in VOICING column. A noting of “div” indicates some incidental divisi within a part or parts, but not a true independent part throughout the entire work. Solos and accompaniment are also noted.
