GEORGE R. STURGIS

George R. Sturgis (1848-1928) was born in Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada. His family emigrated to Michigan and he grew up near Peck, Michigan. He graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music and became a music teacher. He taught voice, violin and piano, and operated a singing school for many years in Lexington, Michigan. He retired to his previous home at Peck, where he lived until his death. He wrote a number of hymns and songs for pedagogical use and compiled a volume of music for singing schools that was published by R. H. Meredith of Chicago.
