J. H. RUEBUSH

James Hott Ruebush (1865-1948) was born in Singer’s Glenn, Virginia. His father and grandfather were musicians and teachers. He trained at the Grand Conservatory of Music in New York and studied with many of the famous teachers of the time including Horatio R. Palmer, and F. W. Root. He taught music at Shenandoah University, Virginia, and became general manager of the institution. He held many singing schools and conventions throughout the region and was the editor of many well-known collections of songs and manuals of music instruction- many of them publications by the family firm Ruebush-Kieffer Co. He died in Dayton, Virginia.
