Frederick Brandeis (1835-1899) was born in Vienna, where he trained in piano and composition. He went to America at age fourteen and toured the United States as pianist with the William Vincent Wallace company. He settled in New York City and became a respected pianist and teacher. He held organist positions at St. John the Evangelist Church, St James’ Church, the Forty-fourth Street Synagogue, and at St. Peter & St Paul’s Church in Brooklyn. He died in New York. His compositions include orchestral music, chamber works, piano pieces, quartets, glees, part-songs, and songs.
