John Spencer Camp (1858–1946) was born in Middletown, Connecticut, and trained at Wesleyan University. He briefly studied law, but returned to music, studying under several teachers including Dudley Buck and Antonin Dvorak. He became organist at the Park Congregational Church, Hartford, then organist and choirmaster at Center Church, Hartford. In 1921 he became full-time treasurer of the Austin Organ Company. He was conductor of the Hartford Philharmonic Orchestra and a founder of the American Guild of Organists. He was a lecturer and recitalist and was active in the Connecticut Music Teachers’ Association. His compositions include orchestral works, cantatas, instrumental pieces, anthems, songs and piano pieces.
