Frank Marion Davis (1839-1897) was born near Marcellus, New York. He started writing tunes and setting words to them as a child, but never formally studied music. He studied on his own and in local singing schools. His family bought him a four octave Prescott Melodeon prompting him to study and write instrumental music, too. He traveled extensively in the states, mainly in the East and South. During his career, he lived in Marcellus, New York; Vicksburg, Mississippi; Baltimore, Maryland; Cincinnati, Ohio; Burr Oak, Michigan; and Findley, Michigan. He taught vocal classes and instrumental, performed as soloist, and directed choirs. Over one hundred of his vocal and instrumental compositions were published in sheet form, his songs appeared in many contemporary collections, and he had ten books published for Sunday schools and temperance workers. He was also considered a fine artist by many, and friends displayed his works done in oil, watercolor and crayon. He also composed under the pseudonym C. L. Jackson. He died of a heart attack in Chesterfield, Indiana, while participating in a camp meeting.
