Joseph Henius (1877-1912) was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, according to his death notice, although other records indicate his birthplace as New York. He lived in New York and was a student of Antonín Dvořák at the National Conservatory of Music. He became a successful teacher, pianist, and composer, holding positions at New York University, the Institute of Musical Art in New York. He established the Henius Studios in New York, organized the Joseph Henius Club of American Music, and was a frequent lecturer. His compositions include chamber works, piano pieces, and songs. He also edited a book of humor, Sketches of lowly life in a great city (1899), drawn and written by his father-in-law Michael Angelo Woolf (1837-1899).
