Newell Coe Stewart (1838-1921) was born near Loyalsock, Pennsylvania, the family moving to Ohio when he was young. He was educated at Oberlin Academy, then travelled to the East Coast and studied with Lowell Mason. He taught choral music and served as music supervisor in the Cleveland, Ohio, public schools for thirty-eight years. He was a nationally recognized composer, author, and compiler of music teaching materials. He held leadership positions in the Music Teachers National Association and the Music Education Department of the National Education Association. His work helped the transition from singing school tune-books to the use of graded classroom curriculum. He was conductor of a choral group the Central Musical Association and conducted mass choirs from the Cleveland schools at Cleveland’s Saengerfests. He became director of the Star Course concert series in Cleveland bringing prominent orchestras and artists to the city. He authored songbooks for children and systematic courses of elementary instruction in music. He died in Flushing, Queens, New York.
