Arnold Johann Gantvoort (1857-1937) was born in Amsterdam, Holland (The Netherlands). He was educated at the Real Gymnasium with music training from tutors in Amsterdam, Berlin and Paris. Emigrating to the U. S., he studied at the National Normal University at Lebanon, Ohio, and the College of Music of Cincinnati. He taught at Bowling Green Female College, Bowling Green, Kentucky; at Oxford College at Oxford, Ohio; in the public schools in Piqua, Ohio; and at the College of Music of Cincinnati as a teacher of piano and theory. At Cincinnati he was made the assistant director of the college and then held the position of manager for 25 years. He left that position and taught at the University of California, Los Angeles. He authored books on music history, theory and harmony and published a course book for music reading. In 1911, He was appointed by the secretary of state at Washington as a delegate from the United States to the international musical congress at Rome. He died in Los Angeles.
