Elihu S. Rice (1827-1912) was born in Genesee, New York. His father died when Elihu was 5 and the family moved to Logansport, Indiana. At 15 he started working as a clerk, then in a dry-goods house where he eventually became a partner in Merriam, Rice & Howes. He later bought out his partners to form E. S. Rice & Son. He also was President of the King Drill Company and Director of the First National Bank of Logansport. From his childhood, he had a great interest in music and studied music on his own. In 1848, he became director of a mixed voice glee club and formed a male quartet “The Rocky Mountain Glee Club.” The quartet achieved some fame for their participation in the 1856 presidential election campaign. He became director of the Logansport choral union and leader of the Logansport Baptist Church choir. He died in Logansport. He composed a number of anthems, hymns, part-songs and quartets. His pieces appeared in song books created for the music conventions held throughout the Mid-West.
