Hugh Henry McGranahan (1854-1931) was born in Jamestown, Pennsylvania. When he was ten, he began his musical study under his uncle James McGranahan, a well-known music teacher. He studied with George F. Root at the Summer Normal School, and travelled to the Paris Exposition and toured Europe with a musical group under Dr. Eben Tourjee. He taught at a number of musical institutes and conventions in Pennsylvania and New York then went to Boston and studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. He later had charge of New York City Church Choral Union and the Philadelphia Church Choral Union. Moving to Chicago, he became the first head the Music Department at Moody Bible Institute. Continuing his music teaching, he returned to Philadelphia but because of health reasons, he soon left full-time musical work for two years and entered the insurance field in Pittsburgh. After re-entering the music field, he directed music in the educational department of the Bellefield Presbyterian Church and taught music at the United Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He continued to direct at various assemblies and conventions and died in Jamestown. He wrote many songs and hymns and edited or co-edited several collections of hymns and music for singing schools.
