CHARLES WAKEFIELD CADMAN

Charles Wakefield Cadman (1881-1946) was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and trained in Pittsburg. He was music editor and critic of the Pittsburgh Dispatch. He became one of the most prominent composers in the Indianist Movement of American composition, studying and incorporating musical themes of indigenous peoples. He was regarded as one of the foremost experts on the indigenous music, traveling West often to study and learn. He moved to Denver, Colorado, for a time, and later moved to Los Angeles, California. He co-founded the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and performed as a solo pianist. He also worked with film studios, writing the scores for several films. He composed in almost every genre, including operas, operettas, American Indian and other art songs, orchestral music, chamber music, and organ music.
