ADAM GEIBEL

Adam Geibel (1855-1933) was born in Neuenheim, Germany, and was blinded by an eye infection at age eight. He emigrated from Germany at about age ten and studied at the Philadelphia Institute for the Blind. He founded the Adam Geibel Music Company, which later evolved into the Hall-Mack Company, then merged to become the Rodeheaver Hall-Mack Company. He received an honorary Music Degree from Temple University. He was chief organist for the John Stetson Mission Sunday School, conducted the Stetson Chorus of Philadelphia, and was a music instructor at the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind where he taught piano, violin, harmony and composition. He died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He edited or co-edited a number of hymn collections. He composed cantatas, anthems, hymns, gospel songs, and was well known for some of his secular songs. His songs “Sleep, Sleep, Sleep” and “Kentucky Babe” were recorded and popularized by Fred Waring and Bing Crosby.
