L. B. MARSHALL

Leonard Babbidge Marshall (1847-1913) was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His father was well known in Boston musical circles and was chief tenor of the Handel and Haydn Society. He was educated in the public schools and studied music with leading Boston teachers. He travelled to Europe and studied music with prominent teachers in Milan, Paris, and London. Returned to Massachusetts and taught in the public schools in Somerville, Woburn, and Boston. His teaching career spanned fifty years, including ending his career as assistant director of music in Boston. He wrote a number of books on music education including “Success in Public-school Music” and “The New Normal Music Course.” He also compiled, arranged and composed collections for school, church and community use. Some of these collections were “Sparkling Diamonds: A Collection Of New Music For Sabbath School, Gospel Meetings And The Home Circle,” “The Halcyon song-book,” and “Songs of Happy Life, for Schools, Homes and Bands of Mercy.” Most of his compositions were songs, choruses, glees and part-songs for church and educational use.
