F. A. CLARK

Francis A. Clark (1868–1948) was born in New York and became a respected Black musician and composer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Little is known of his life, but he was active and influential as composer and arranger. He was employed by the B. F. Banes & Co. music publishers and established his own publishing company. Known as “Professor F. A. Clark” and was also associated with the Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church as well as serving as choirmaster in several other churches for over four decades. He is especially known for his collaboration with song-writer Charles Albert Tindley (1851–1933) who helped shape Black-American Gospel Music.
