HERBERT GRIGGS

Herbert Griggs (1847-1912) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After musical training and experience as organist and music teacher, he was hired as the Supervisor of Music in the Denver, Colorado, public schools. He was Instructor in Sight Reading and Solfeggio and the Training Department for Teachers in Public Schools at the University of Denver and was a well known organist in the city. He also organized and directed the community chorus “Apollo Club.” Near the end of his career, he ,moved to New York City as special agent in the music department of the Silver, Burdett & Company publishing house. He died in New York. He was a respected authority and lecturer on music education and wrote many books and articles on the subject. He also published collections of his editions, arrangements and compositions for educational use.
