The Nineteenth Century musical world was divided along gender lines– women were excluded from organizations such as the Royal Society of Musicians and had little success attaining positions of leadership. But a shifting society slowly started to offer new social, educational, and professional opportunities for women. A number of women were able to publish their compositions, often winning prizes for their work. The demand for choral music increased with the emergence of the mixed choir rather than the male glee club, movements for music literacy, the growth of town and village choirs, and the success of music festivals. In North America, women who wrote music for evangelical activities often contributed to pedagogical materials. This collection is by no means exhaustive, but represents part-songs for mixed choir composed and published by women in the era.
