E. L. ASHFORD

Emma Louise Ashford [née Hindle] (1850–1930) was born in Newark, Delaware. As her family relocated frequently, she showed her musical talent early, becoming organist at the Episcopal Church in Kewanee, Illinois, at age 12. She married John Ashford, an amateur singer from Bath, England and moved to Chicago, Illinois where she became alto soloist, organist, and teacher at St. John’s Episcopal Church. They relocated to Nashville, Tennessee when Mr. Ashford, an engineer, became Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at Vanderbilt University. She was active in the region’s musical life, was organist and choir director in Nashville churches, and editor of The Organist. She traveled extensively, performing or conducting her compositions. Her compositions number over 600 pieces of music, including organ voluntaries, sacred cantatas, hymns, song cycles, duets, anthems, and works for piano and organ.
