NON-AMERICANS

With the popularity and commercial success of part-songs, many from the UK appeared in US publications as well as translated versions of non-English language part-songs. An additional handful of part-songs were published in the United States written by non-domestic composers in other countries. They are original compositions, generally short in form, even by part-song norms, and almost all texts are originally in English, not translations from other languages. Most were written for publications generally intended to raise artistic standards of musical literature for school use that were assembled by internationally-recognized musical leaders in the US, such as Horatio Parker (1863–1919) and George Whitefield Chadwick (1854–1931). Being intended principally for school choirs, these part-songs are not complex, but still show some expertise of composers recognized internationally at that time. These little compositions are not well-known, sometimes not identified in catalogues of a composer’s works, and are somewhat unusual, often outside a composer’s typical genres.

All are mixed chorus unless noted; some contain divisi.
