CHARLES VILLIERS STANFORD

Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) was one of the most influential British musicians at the turn of the Twentieth Century. He was born in Dublin and studied at Cambridge, in Leipzig, and in Berlin. He became organist at Trinity College, Cambridge and was one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music, where he taught composition for the rest of his life. He was also Professor of Music at Cambridge, successor to Sir George Macfarren. Some of his best known pupils were Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Ireland, Frank Bridge, Arthur Bliss, Herbert Howells, and Edgar Bainton. He was also active as a conductor, particularly the Bach Choir in London, the Leeds Philharmonic Society, and the Leeds Festival. As composer, his substantial oeuvre of works includes symphonies, string quartets, operas, chamber music, organ pieces, songs, choral works, anthems, and service music. His part-songs are often viewed as the peak of the form in that era. A passionate Irishman, he wrote many settings of Irish Airs and used texts by the popular Irish poets Thomas Moore and Alfred Percival Graves.
