Hugo Wilhelm Ludwig Kaun (1863-1932) was born in Berlin, Germany. After his musical training there, he relocated to the United States and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He became a prominent figure in the Milwaukee musical culture and was conductor of the Milwaukee Liederkranz and the Milwaukee Men’s Choir. He also taught at the Milwaukee Conservatory and was active as teacher, conductor, and performer. He later returned to Berlin and was appointed to the Prussian Academy of Arts. He died in Berlin. His compositions include a wide variety of genres with five operas, three symphonies, string quartets, operas, oratorios, chamber pieces, piano pieces; some of his works are based on American themes. His son Bernhard Kaun later became a composer of film scores in Hollywood.
