Arthur Farwell (1872-1952) was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in engineering, but changed his career to music. He studied music in Boston, Berlin and Paris before becoming a lecturer in music at Cornell University. He conducted municipal concerts in New York City of massed performances of choral works by up to 1,000 voices. He also directed the Music School Settlement in NY. He was Acting Head of the music department at the University of California, Berkeley in 1918-19 and founded the Santa Barbara Community Chorus. He then taught theory at Michigan State College before settling in New York. At the turn of the century, he founded the Wa-Wan Press, publishing works of “American Indianist” composers. While in East Lansing, he established a lithographic hand-press and published his own music. As a composer, he wrote orchestral and instrumental works, chamber music, choral music, theatre scores, masques and music for community performance.
