BERTHOLD TOURS

Berthold Tours (1838-1897) was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, son of organist Barthélemy Tours. He studied under his father, then at the Conservatoires of Brussels and Leipzig. He accompanied Prince George Galitzin to Russia and remained there for two years. He moved to London where he composed, taught violin and played with various orchestras including the Royal Italian Opera. He was organist of the Swiss Church, Holborn and in 1878 he became a musical adviser and editor with Novello and Company. With Novello, he arranged several works from the orchestral scores, including Beethoven’s Mass in C, four of Schubert’s Masses, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Gounod’s Redemption. His compositions include works for the piano and other instruments, and a large number of songs and part-songs. He also composed hymn tunes, anthems and services for the Anglican Church. He died in London.

All are mixed chorus; some contain divisi.
