EDWARD BAIRSTOW

Sir Edward Cuthbert Bairstow (1874-1946) was born in Huddersfield, England. He studied organ at Oxford, apprenticed at Westminster Abbey, then studied organ and theory at the University of Durham. After a number of positions, he served as organist of York Minster from 1913 to his death. He accepted a professorship at Durham University in 1929, but remained a resident in York since the demands for teaching were not great. His compositions are mainly for the church including large and small-scale anthems as well as service settings. Bairstow was also active as an instrumental composer, mainly for the organ.

All are mixed chorus; some contain divisi.
