William G. Wood (1859-1895) was born in Armagh, Ireland. He first studied at the Cathedral, becoming deputy organist, then at the Royal Academy of Music in London, winning the Lucas Prize for composition. He was appointed organist of Christ Church, Woburn Square, then organist and music master of Highgate Grammar School. He was a well-known recitalist and played the organ at the first concert held in the Queen’s Hall. He died in London. His compositions include an operetta, three settings of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, a concert overture for orchestra, and much music for the organ, and assorted small works. His younger brother was composer and organist Charles Wood.
