STEPHEN S. STRATTON

Stephen Samuel Stratton (1840-1906) was born in London, trained as a chorister at St. Mary’s Church, Ealing, and studied under Charles Lucas. He was an original member of the College of Organists and held organist positions at St. Mary the Virgin, Soho, London; St. James’ Church, Friern Barnet; St. Bartholomew’s Church, Edgbaston, Birmingham; St. John’s Church, Harborne; and Church of the Saviour, Birmingham. He was music critic with the Birmingham Post, and contributor to the London Musical Press. He wrote several books including The Life of Mendelssohn, Nicolo Paganini: His Life and Work, and co-authored British Musical Biography. He died in Birmingham. His compositions include church music, piano pieces, songs and part songs.

All are mixed chorus; some contain divisi.
