John Sewell (1819-1882) was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, and was educated at Magdalen, Oxford. Little is known of his life other than he was a music teacher in Rotherham, Yorkshire, and long-time organist at Rotherham Parish Church. His compositions include a few anthems, service music, piano pieces, and songs. He died in Sheffield.
