ERNEST R. NEWTON

Ernest R. Newton (1856-1929) was born in Llandudno, Wales, son of Rev. T. Newton, Vicar of Barnstaple. He was educated at Friars’ School, Monmouth Grammar School, and St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge, the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music in London. He was organist at St. Thomas, Bloomsbury Square. He composed many popular ballad-type songs and duets and was a prolific arranger of folk and popular songs. He also wrote for organ, piano and some instrumental works include music for band. He also authored the books How to Compose a Song and The Choir-Boy’s Guide to the Cathedral Psalter.

All are mixed chorus; some contain divisi.
