GEORGE C. MARTIN

Sir George Clement Martin (1844-1916) was born in Lambourn, Berkshire, and studied organ under John Stainer. He reportedly cycled from Lambourn to Oxford everyday for his studies. He was organist at Lambourn Parish Church; sub organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral and succeeded John Stainer as Organist and Master of Choristers at St. Paul’s in 1888. He wrote a primer on The Art of Training Choir Boys. His compositions were mostly church music, including a Te Deum in A, performed at the Thanksgiving Service held on the steps of the Cathedral in Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee year. He wrote a number of hymns, of which the best known is probably ST. HELEN. His transcription of Elgar’s orchestral work Imperial March for organ has been a popular concert work.

All are mixed chorus; some contain divisi.
