WILLIAM KNYVETT

William Knyvett [Knyvete] (1779–1856) was probably born in London, England. He was educated primarily by his father and the glee composer Samuel Webbe. He sang in the treble chorus at the Concerts of Antient Music, appointed one of the gentlemen of the Chapel Royal, and became a lay vicar of Westminster Abbey and a composer of the Chapel Royal. He became well-known as an alto or contra-tenor singer, appearing at London concerts and at the provincial festivals for over forty years. He was conductor of the Concerts of Antient Music, conductor at the Birmingham festivals, and the York festival. His compositions were successful, including pieces written for the coronation of George IV, and the coronation of Queen Victoria. He died at Ryde, Isle of Wight.
