JOHN IRELAND

John Ireland (1879-1962) was born in Ingelewood, Bowdon, Cheshire, England, of a family of Scottish descent. He entered the Royal College of Music at the age at age 14, studying piano and organ. He also composition under Charles Villiers Stanford there. He became a teacher at the R.C.M. and was sub organist at Holy Trinity Church, London, then organist and choirmaster at St. Luke’s Church, Chelsea, London. Influential as a composer of a style of “English Impressionism,” his works include much chamber music, church music, works for piano and for organ, songs, and part-songs. He died in Rock Mill, Washington, Sussex.
