HENRY GADSBY

Henry Robert Gadsby (1842-1907) was born at Hackney, London, England. He was a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral, at the same time as Sir John Stainer. He received basic harmony training from the master of choristers, but was mostly self-taught. He was a teacher of piano and held organist posts at St. Ann’s, Blackfriars; Camden Church, Camberwell; and Church of St. Peter’s, Brockley. He succeeded John Hullah as professor of harmony at Queen’s College, London, and one of the original professors at the Guildhall School of Music. He was a member of the Philharmonic Society and fellow of the College of Organists. He was also a talented artist, creating sketches and watercolors. He died in Putney, London. His compositions include symphonies, assorted instrumental works, service music, cantatas, anthems, hymns, and part-songs.

All are mixed chorus; some contain divisi.
