Samuel George Benson (1857–1925) was born in London, England, and trained at the Royal Academy of Music. He held
organist positions in England before moving to Australia about 1885, taking a position at St James’ Cathedral, Townsville, where he played the first pipe organ in North Queensland. He then held organist positions at several Australian churches, including Charters Towers; the Fortitude Valley Wesleyan Church; St Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Brisbane; the Albert Street Wesleyan Church, Brisbane; and St. Andrew’s Uniting Church, Brisbane. He was active as recitalist and composer.
He died in Queensland.
