HENRY C. BANISTER

Henry Charles Banister (1831-1897) was born in London, England, son of cellist Henry Joshua Banister and grandson of composer Charles William Banister. He first studied music under his father and then at the Royal Academy of Music. He became Professor of Harmony and Composition at the R.A.M., and served as Professor at the Guildhall School of Music and is Professor of Harmony at the Royal Normal College for the Blind. He was prolific as lecturer, teacher, and author, known for his biography of Sir George Alexander Macfarren. His compositions include symphonies, overtures, string quartets, piano works, cantatas, canzonets, anthems, songs, and part-songs.

All are mixed chorus; some contain divisi.
