CHARLES MACPHERSON

Charles MacPherson (1870-1927) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He became a chorister at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, at age nine and later studied music at the Royal Academy of Music. He became organist at St. Clement Eastcheap. Following that position, he returned to St; Paul’s as assistant organist before being appointed organist there in 1916. He held that position until he died suddenly in London. He was Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music and President of the Royal College of Organists. Two hymns by Macpherson were included in Hymns Ancient and Modern (1916)- EXSURGAT DEUS and STONYPATH.
