C. E. HORN

Charles Edward Horn (1786-1849) was born in St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London, receiving his early training from his father. He became a successful stage singer and wrote operas, oratorios, glees, and songs. Thomas Attwood accused him of plagiarizing the song Cherry Ripe but Horn was acquitted of the charge. He went to New York City, giving singing performances and staging various works. He spent years living in New York and in London, but finished his career in the U. S. He was music director of the Olympic Theatre (London), music director of Park Theatre (New York), gave singing lessons, and opened a music store on Broadway. He helped found the New York Philharmonic Society. He finally settled in Boston, where he was director of the Handel and Haydn Society. He died in Boston.
