ARTHUR E. FISHER

Arthur Elwell Fisher (1848-1913) was born in England, and studied music at the Paris Conservatoire of Music and at Trinity College, London. He was an organist in Liverpool before relocating to Montreal, Canada, as organist at St. George’s Church. He moved to Toronto where he taught voice and music theory at the Toronto College of Music, played viola in the Toronto String Quartette, was founder and director of Toronto’s St. Cecilia Madrigal Society, and held various church positions. He became a music examiner at the University of Toronto and was the first travelling examiner in local examinations throughout Ontario and the West. He was also music director of the Kingston Ladies’ College and taught at the Chicago Conservatory. He composed two cantatas, a rhapsody for violin and orchestra, a string trio, about 100 songs, works for piano, violin, and choral pieces. The location of his death is unknown, but he is buried in Montreal.
