William Charles Filby (1833-1913) was born in Hammersmith, Middlesex, England, and studied music in France. He held numerous choirmaster and organist positions including St. Peter, Walworth, London; St. Matthew, Bayswater, London; St. Luke, Westbourne Park, London; Holy Trinity, Margate, Kent; Holy Trinity, Stepney, London; St. Peter’s Church, Hammersmith; Bromley Parish Church, Kent; and St. Paul, West Greenwich, London. He was organist at the International Exhibitions of 1882 and of 1885. He wrote and lectured on church music, opera and music education. He died in Richmond, Surrey, England. His compositions include operettas, psalm settings in cantata form, two masses, other music for the Roman Catholic Church, anthems, canticles, piano pieces, organ voluntaries, songs, part songs, and choruses. A number of his hymn-tunes were included in Hymns Ancient and Modern.
