SEYMOUR J. G. EGERTON

Seymour John Grey “Sim” Egerton, 4th Earl of Wilton (1839-1898) was the son of Thomas Egerton, 2nd Earl of Wilton (1799–1882) and Lady Mary Margaret Stanley, daughter of Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby. His paternal grandfather was Robert Grosvenor, 1st Marquess of Westminster. He was the owner and namesake of the Lord Wilton violin and an associate of Sir Arthur Sullivan. Sullivan described him as the best amateur musician in England “who struggled manfully against the disadvantages of birth, wealth, and position.” Egerton was the first president and conductor of the “Wandering Minstrels”, an amateur orchestral society. The receipts of their concerts were given to many charities throughout the country. His compositions include a cantata, songs, and part-songs.

All are mixed chorus; some contain divisi.
