HENRY COWARD

Sir Henry Coward (1849-1944) was born in Liverpool, England. He became a teacher after educating himself. He trained in music at Oxford. He was interested in the tonic sol-fa system and founded the Sheffield Tonic Sol-fa Association which was renamed the Sheffield Musical Union. He established the Sheffield Festival and achieved great recognition performing works by Handel, Bach, and Elgar. He also conducted choirs at choirs at Leeds, Glasgow, Preston, Huddersfield, and Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1908 and 1911, he toured North America, South Africa, and Australia with the Sheffield Choir. He also taught music at Sheffield Training College and lectured at the University of Sheffield. He died in Sheffield.
