W. STERNDALE BENNETT

Sir William Sterndale Bennett (1816-1875) was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, son of Robert Bennett, the organist of Sheffield parish church. He received his first musical education from his grandfather John Bennett, a professional bass singer, He sang in the choir of King’s College Chapel and trained at the Royal Academy of Music. He enjoyed success as pianist and composer early and travelled to Germany, befriending Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann. He returned to London and taught at the R.A.M. most the rest of his life, interspersed with visits to Germany and a brief tenure at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge. His pupils included significant composers such as Arthur Sullivan and C. Hubert Parry. He died in St. John’s Wood, London. He composed a large volume of music and was one of the most influential figures in English Music. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
