A. H. ASHWORTH

Abraham Hargreaves Ashworth (1861-1944) was born in Gloucestershire, England, the son of a son of Baptist minister. He was educated at Borough Road College in London and Durham University. He was headmaster of various schools in Leeds, conductor of the Leeds Musicians Union, choirmaster in Leeds, Saltaire and Blentheim, and teacher of music at Yorkshire College. In 1902 he emigrated to South Africa. His various positions included vocal music teacher the Boys High School in Kimberley, choirmaster of St Mary’s Cathedral, music examiner for the Cape Department of Education, conductor of the Kimberley Musical Association, choirmaster of the Baptist Union Church, founder/conductor of the Kimberley Amateur Orchestra, and conductor of the Kimberley Male Voice Choir. He died in Pietersburg, South Africa. His wife was singer/pianist/organist/music teacher Louisa Winder and his son was composer Alexander Hargreaves Ashworth.
