Martin Albert Cheek (1862-1929) was born in Marylebone, London, England. After training in music, he became a music teacher in London. He emigrated to New Zealand, settling in the Marlborough District. He operated an active music studio and was organist at the Presbyterian Church, Renwick, then organist and choirmaster at St. Andrew’s church, Marlborough, for 24 years. He was a member of the Society of Musicians of Australasia, local secretary and examiner for Trinity College, London, examiner in music at the Blenheim centre for teachers’ certificates, Vice-President of the Blenheim Amateur Opera Society, and director with the Blenhein Choral Society. He died in Blenheim. He was well known for his active support for musical activities and often published papers and presented lectures on music. Only a few small compositions are known.
