George Lowell Tracy (1855-1921) was born in Lynn, Massachusetts. At age 10, he made his first public appearance, conducting the orchestra for a performance of Oliver Twist. He directed the First Corps Cadets and the Bank Officers Association of Boston. He went to England for two years at the request of Sir Arthur Sullivan to assist in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. He returned to America and toured coast to coast with the Hanlon Brothers, pantomimists as he composed, arranged, and directed all the music for their shows, and his wife sang in the company. He was then hired by the State of Massachusetts, doing special work among the mentally disabled by experimenting with “the application of musical vibrations to the cure of mental defectives.” For a few years, he lived near Lewiston, Maine, and founded the Rubenstein Club of Lewiston and Auburn, and the Maine Conservatory of Music. He was then a professor of music at a Boston college about a year before his death.
