Benjamin Hamma (1831–1911) was born at Freiedlingen, Württemberg, Germany. He studied music privately and trained at the Royal School of Music in Munich. He directed concert and singing societies in Koenigsberg, then devoted himself to teaching, later becoming director of the new music school in Stuttgart. He lived some time in Paris and Rome; and lived over fifteen years in New York City. During his time in New York, he was active as a composer and teacher, and served as organist at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. He died in Stuttgart, Germany. His compositions include the opera Zarrisco, instrumental music, many songs and part songs, and much church music including masses, motets, offertories and a requiem.
