Arthur Fred Musgrave Custance (1866/67-1926) was born in Colwall, Herefordshire, England, son and grandson of Anglican clergy. He studied at Lancing college and graduated from Brasenose, Oxford. He briefly taught in Wales before moving to St. Johns, New Brunswick, Canada. He emigrated to the U. S. and taught high school Latin and music in Duluth, Minnesota for 34 years. He was organist and choir master at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for 28 years and directed the Masonic Lodge choral ensembles. He died in Duluth. Many of his compositions and arrangements were for lodge rites. He also wrote organ pieces, hymns, songs, and part-songs. A well-known piece at the time was a score titled “Taps.” John Philip Sousa programmed it many times in concerts under his direction.
