ARNOLD R. MOTE

Arnold Rudolph Mote (1881-1950) was born in Sydney, Australia, son of English musician William Isaac B. Mote (1852-1933) who emigrated from England to Australia about 1874. Arnold went to England and earned music degrees from Oxford and the University of Durham. He was organist at Sherborne Abbey, Dorsetshire, England and became Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. He returned to Sydney in 1914 as organist of the Central Methodist Mission. He also served as choirmaster at OzTorah, the Great Synagogue of Sydney, and was on the faculty at the University of Sydney. He was known for his piano recital-lectures and his compositions, which include a Magnificat, an Australian rhapsody, and light musical theatre. His brother Livingstone Charles Mote (1887-1963) was also a composer.
