MARCELLUS HIGGS

Marcellus Higgs (1827-1888) was born in Lambeth, Surrey, England. He became an established composer, organist, arranger and conductor in London. He was organist at St. James’ the Less, Pimlico; and St. John’s, Westminster; and conducted the St. John’s Choral Society. He was also Member of the Court of Assistants of the Royal Society of Musicians. His brother James Higgs (1829-1902) was professor of organ and harmony at the Royal Academy of Music and his son Henry Marcellus (H. M.) Higgs was a successful organist. He died in Tooting, London. His compositions include the Operetta The Noble Moringer, anthems, works for harmonium, songs, and part songs.
