JAMES COWARD

James Coward (1824-1880) was born in St. John the Evangelist, Middlesex, England, and sang as chorister in Westminster Abbey. He became a skilled organist and held positions at Lambeth Parish Church; St. George’s Church, Bloomsbury; St. Magnus the Martyr, London Bridge; the Sacred Harmonic Society; and the Grand Lodge of Freemasons; and was long-time Organist at the Crystal Palace at Sydenham. He was also conductor of the Abbey Glee Club, the City Glee Club, and the Western Madrigal Society. He died in London. His brother, William (1826-1873), was an alto singer in Westminster Abbey. His compositions include anthems, organ pieces, piano pieces, glees, songs, and part songs.

All are mixed chorus; some contain divisi.
