George Coleman Gow (1860–1938) was born in Aver, Massachusetts, and graduated from Brown University and Newton Theological Seminary. He became instructor in harmony and pianoforte at Smith College spending one year on leave, studying in Berlin. In 1909, he was appointed as head of music at Vassar College where he remained until his retirement. He was a champion for music in the liberal arts curriculum and promoted new methods for instruction in theory and composition. He conducted the glee club, orchestra, and the college choir. For many years, he served as president of the Dutchess County Musical Association and served as president of the Music Teachers’ National Association. He wrote articles on harmony and theory in the American History and Encyclopedia of Music, and numerous miscellaneous essays. His compositions include songs, part-songs, and anthems.
